Dear Curiosity Journal,

One of the intentions that has emerged from my deep winter meditation is to gain a deeper metaphysical understanding of the elements – earth, water, air, and fire. I want to go back to the natural basics, learn how to balance these elements within myself, and draw on the characteristics of each when the condition calls for them. Already, as I’ve started to lightly hold this intention, turning it around in my mind like a smooth stone in my hand, I realize something. Even in the middle of winter, I’m working with clear cut physical examples of the elements almost hourly. I build a fire in the woodstove. I carry water to the sheep. I order seeds. I sit in the sauna. Looking through this elemental lens has transformed my tasks into a crisp new book to crack open, and I’m already harvesting fresh insight. For example, if the watery parts of me freeze up, I call on the fiery parts to melt them back into flow.
