Field Trip Opportunities

Poetry & Story Hikes

In this field trip opportunity, Driftless Curiosity teams up with RedLou Library to bring you a fun-filled day of hiking while reading poetry or stories posted along trails and forest checkpoints. Children will have a chance to connect to the land and literature in a new interactive way. Students will work their way through a poetry or story adventure, rest while reading in the hammock forest, break for a picnic lunch, and create a nature-based craft. Teachers will receive a book list upon registration and may choose to select or create their own corresponding worksheet.

Fly Fishing

Location: Camp Creek Fishery Area is 3 miles east of Viola along State Hwy 56 intersecting with County Hwy MM. There is a parking lot on the east side of the Fishery Area.

Grades: Highschool

Details:

In this unique outdoor learning opportunity, students will meet with lead guides from Driftless Angler to discover some of the basics of fly fishing like what the trout eat, how they feed, and where they like to hang out. Then students will receive a hands on lesson in how to cast and hopefully land a fish. Rods and reels provided by Trout Unlimited Wisconsin, but students are welcome to bring their own equipment if they like. Students 16 years old or older need a fishing license to fish. Youth may attend the field trip without a license, but will not be allowed to cast into the water.

Foraging

Season: Late April to Late September 

Day/s of the week: Fridays

Grades: 3-12

Details:

In this field trip, students will learn about foraging safety, plant identification, using field guides, and seasonal wild edibles. Youth will hike the land with experienced foragers who will help them to spot and properly identify a number of abundant, easy to recognize plants. There will also be an age appropriate craft offered at the end of the hike.
