Carrying kindling
Sparking first warmth
Waiting for heat to radiate
So water will flow
So buckets will fill
So tanks will quench their thirst
Spreading the bedding
Keeping undersides dry
Refilling mineral
Salt & Iodine
Sorting & swearing
Sweating & Juking
Not bred, no bread
Ewe, Not YOU!

Laying down grain
Hungry muzzles strain
Jostle & Maintain
Tossing evergreens
Over the fence
Spruce is no barley
Second rate – at best
Scratches beneath
Thickening fleece
A daily ceremony
Musky lanolin
Under dirty nails
Bucket-sloshed bibs
Fractions of bales
Alighting her aura
Signs & Scents
Of a shepherdess
Coming from
A long winter’s chore
