Dear Curiosity Journal,
On Tuesday our friend and Driftless Curiosity board member, Diana, came out to help us build the evergreen archway for the yule altar. We hopped in the back of the old farm truck as Rufus drove us out to the white pines. We trimmed the branches near the edge of the field road and filled up the back of the truck with our evergreen harvest. Back at the archway, we wiggled the ends of the branches into the chicken wire base, layering the boughs from bottom to top to create a piney passage up to the yule altar for the Winter Solstice Celebration this weekend. Rufus always jokes that it resembles “Cousin It”, but it has become one of my favorite yule traditions. I love working with the diverse smells and textures of the pines, cedars, and spruce. These evergreens are a symbol of resilience, eternal life, and the enduring spirit of nature during the darkness, cold, and dormancy of the winter months. I’m looking forward to having the community join us this Saturday from 3 PM to 6 PM to celebrate the shortest day of the year.
