Dear Curiosity Journal,

A few frosty nights have brought the more sensitive crop cycles to a close, but the calendula blooms on. I’m delighted, and a bit bewildered, by their tenacity to keep opening up beyond the death nail of the killing cold. As if covered in some ethereal glow, their efflorescence flowers on, flaring into supernovas of, vermillion red, canary yellow, and fluorescent orange. Since they’ve gone to the trouble to come out in the cold, I obediently report to collect their magic, and in return, they make more. So, we continue on like this, them presenting gifts, me kneeling to receive them, like a daily prayer. While all of the other flowers lay limp in the field, we connect, calendula and I, fulfilling a portion of our purpose, making potions.
