Dear Curiosity Journal,
It’s week 5 of our fall CSA and we’re packing 55 standard shares and 5 double shares. I tell Rufus this is good luck because 5 is my favorite number and it’s all very serendipitous. We flow through the harvest day, picking and packing, surrounded by the autumn abundance. Rufus says one of the reasons he chose the life of a vegetable farmer is that he loves being around all of the beautiful food. I hypothesize that being in the presence of an abundance of food has a calming effect on a deep and primal part of our nervous system. When hundreds of pounds of produce pass through your hands, that little lizard brain says, “We’re good here. You have permission to relax”. It’s a sure-fire catalyst for shifting away from a scarcity mindset. The bonus feature on our brain function is that the beauty-appreciating aspect gets a boost as well. The diversity of color, shape, smell, and feel is aesthetically pleasing in the same way art captivates our senses and soothes our soul. At the end of the harvest day, our bodies are exhausted, but our brains are happy.
