Dear Curiosity Journal,

I was amazed to see the progress Gabriela has made on the mega alebrije projects this week. I have grown to really love paper mache and am happy anytime I have the chance to get my hands in some engrudo (the flour paste used to apply the paper). I find the tactical and methodical process of sculpting with paper to be quite therapeutic, even meditative. As we worked, Gaby shared the history of alebrijes, a curious creature, who appeared in a fever dream of the original cartonero (paper mache) artist Pedro Linares. I marvel at how one man’s heat-induced hallucination has become a cultural phenomenon, and how art connects us to a world beyond the physical. Gabriela is collaborating with the grandson of Pedro Linares to create these special alebrijes, and I am so honored to be a small part of it. If you are curious, they will be on exhibit at the Wormfarm Institute Farm Art D/Tour from October 5th through the 14th.
