Dear Curiosity Journal,

It’s almost September, which means it’s time for the Driftless Region’s Dia de Muertos Celebration to take center stage of my life, time for Gabriela Marvan and I to become BFFs who talk almost every day, time to practice my Spanish, and time to immerse myself in eye-popping Mexican folk art. On Wednesday, I visited Gaby while she was working on her impressive cartoneria (paper mache) project. She and her husband Ryan are creating two mega alebrijes for the Wormfarm Institute Farm Art Dtour. Alebrijes are vibrantly painted Mexican folk art sculptures of mythical creatures, which are combinations of different animals. I helped Gaby with the 4 life-sized Catrinas last year, so I know how much time, hard work, creativity, and passion goes into every inch of a project like this. Gaby never ceases to amaze me. When I showed Rufus the photos, he laughed and said, “That’s some serious Capricorn energy!” Ha! She’s my Capricorn queen, always matching my crazy Capricorn energy and beyond. I can’t wait to throw another epic Dia de Muertos Celebration with her! Stay tuned for all of the cool Dia de Muertos updates coming soon!
