Dear Curiosity Journal,
We kicked off our fall CSA with a gorgeous share of garden goodness. Rufus, Annie and I harvested and packed red potatoes, sweet corn, green beans, cucumbers, green peppers, beets, kale, green scallions, tomatoes, and cilantro. The boxes were filled to the brim and giving off the intoxicating aromas of an early autumn harvest, which inspired me to make a fresh pico de gallo to go with our lunch. There is something about those commingled ingredients that just makes everything better. I needed a bit of food magic to uplift the faint sense of sadness filling my headspace, as this is Annie’s final harvest day with us. Thursday is her last day and Friday she will return to Minneapolis. In the flurry of a farm summer, I feel we’ve made a lifelong friend, and we will feel her absence as the school year rolls forward. We can’t thank her enough for bringing her beautiful energy to Keewaydin this season, for carrying this crazy dream with us, for allowing us to share our philosophy and love of the land with her, and for being a rock-solid partner in the field. She set the bar unbelievably high for whoever will come after her. I’m not crying, you’re crying!
