Dear Curiosity Journal,

Volunteers rallied with us on Sunday to transplant thousands of marigolds for the Driftless Region’s Dia de Muertos Celebration. We hosted a retreat on Saturday, so Rufus and I were scrambling to finish the field prep, adding compost, setting the landscape fabric, making holes, and burying the fabric edges, as volunteers put plants in the soil right behind us. We decided to put the bulk of the marigold crop in one mega marigold bed along the driveway this year. The bed is 600 feet long and 4 rows deep, with plants 10 inches apart. We’ve seeded close to 6,000 plants a few weeks ago, and now most of them are in the field. To ensure their survival, Tim, Kelly, and I hand watered each transplant, while also attempting to call down the rain, and we did get a little shower, which felt so refreshing for plants and planters alike. I’m beyond grateful for everyone who showed up to lend a hand. I can’t wait to see and smell the cempasuchil in full bloom.
