Dear Curiosity Journal,
This Tuesday, Rufus, Annie, and I harvested and packed the 6th week of the summer CSA, and it shaped up to be a beautiful box. We’ve reached the point in the season when the vegetables are really starting to produce in abundance. The consistent sunshine and rain, as well as a lot of hard work, have done wonders for the gardens. Every time we bring in a crop from the field, I remark on how beautiful, uniform, and plentiful the produce is. I joke with Rufus that we need to be taking these babies to the county fair, over here looking like the photos from the seed catalog. In the midst of the pack out, I glance up at the chalkboard to see that Annie has drawn a little scene of our farm crew, which she continued to add to throughout the day. My reaction started out as a smirk, seeing Annie and I high-fiving, and grew to a full belly laugh, when I scanned over to the drawing of Balio labeled “Dumb Head”. Annie and Balio have a complex love/hate relationship, in which Annie genuinely wants to be Balio’s BFF, but he keeps stealing her food, overturning her trash can, and leaving dead animals at her door, so he’s on the shit list about 50% of the time, earning himself the name “Dumb Head”.
