Dear Curiosity Journal,
On Sunday, we co-hosted a free movement workshop for farmers with Cynthia Flores. She founded Labor-Movement with the mission to help farmers, fishermen, and industrial athletes to improve their movement health, increase efficiency, and extend longevity in a season or career. She shared some eye-opening perspectives that have me thinking differently about how I care for my body. She identifies farmers as one of the most challenging groups of athletes. Generally, athletes are either focused on endurance or strength. Farmers must excel in both. She also pointed out that the majority of athletes have a shorter season than farmers, with longer rest periods. Also, we don’t usually have access to the same financial resources as athletes, which puts additional stress on the mind and body. Well, when you put it that way… damn. We’re kind of super humans. We learned some strategies and exercises to improve body mechanics in the field and discussed the underlying wellness principles which support our work, food, fluid, sleep, and stress. One of the loudest take-aways of the conversation was that none of us are eating enough protein for the amount of labor we’re doing. So, we’ll be experimenting with a higher protein diet in the next few weeks to see how we feel. Annie literally busted out a pork roast right away. We’re sending a big thank you to Cynthia, Labor-Movement, and all of the partnering organizations who help bring this free program to farmers. The athletes in overalls appreciate you!
