Dear Curiosity Journal,
On Saturday, Rufus and Mark Shephard planted 2,000 chestnut trees near the northern border of the farm. I currently don’t know much about chestnut production, but I think this is a great opportunity to get curious. The planting is in alignment with our goal to add one perennial crop to the land every season. So far, we have asparagus, hazelnuts, apples, pears, aronia, elderberries, raspberries, honeyberries, and rhubarb. Last season, I also started establishing some perennial herbs, including yarrow, echinacea, lemon balm, lavender, and lovage. I think Rufus said the chestnut trees will come into production in 2031, so we’re definitely playing the long game here. However, I think future foodscapes are always a worthy investment.
