Dear Curiosity Journal,

One of the joys of keeping a daily journal is the circadian counsel of the thesaurus. I love looking up common words to invent the most concise and ariose language to convey both essence and undertones. I recently unearthed the word “woolgather” as a metonym for ponder. As a shepherdess and wordsmith, this discovery delivered an electric jolt of jollity which mushroomed into curiosity. How did this word become equivalent to wondering? My imagination runs wild. The definition of woolgather is, “gathering of the tufts of wool shed by sheep and caught on bushes” or alternatively, “indulgence in idle fancies and in daydreaming; absentmindedness. Synonyms include; fantasize, hallucinate, imagine, and pipe-dream. HA! I envision a time before modern distractions when boredom gave birth to wonder, woolgathering, and brilliance.
