Fly Fishing #2 Intermediate Class

In 2024, we are expanding our fly fishing program into a 3-part series, based on abundant curiosity. The Fly Fishing #2 Intermediate Class is great for anglers with some experience looking to build their knowledge and skills. Driftless Angler guide, Peter Cozad, will lead this hands-on learning experience and cover a variety of topics including knots, gear, tying flies, casting, and more. So, if you’ve been curious about fly fishing, come out and give it a try this summer and build your skills throughout the season with the Advanced Class.
Please purchase your fishing license with the DNR prior to the workshop if you would like to fish afterwards.

Lost & Found
Exploring Cycles, Sensuality & the Written Word

We are cyclical beings, part of a sensual, animate world, so let’s come together and celebrate that! Please join writer/storyteller & somatics guide, Tracy Chipman for this emergent in person women’s* writing workshop soaking in the rich landscape of Wisconsin’s Driftless region at Keewaydin Farms. Together we shall inquire into things lost & found, as cyclical and sensual beings. We will be guided in sensory somatic practices, writing exercises and oral stories to deepen our direct experiences of being alive, to better know our bodies and ourselves.

Tracy Chipman (she/her) weaves the ancient rivers of oral storytelling, writing and somatic practices creating unforgettable experiences inviting us towards more embodied creative experiences, self knowledge & wholeness. She is a Wisconsin native who has traveled far and wide, and now resides in northern Wisconsin, occupying the traditional territories of the Anishinaabe peoples. In March 2023 Tracy published her first book, Borealis Mundi – Resting in Place, Loss & Grace. Please visit her website to learn more about her work.

The Water of Life
In Praise of Water Through Stories & Storytelling

Let’s gather together in praise for aquifers, rivers, lakes, for rain and the mighty seas. Let’s gather in the sweet twilight at Keewaydin Farm to do what humans have been doing for 20,000 years – to be spellbound by the magic of storytelling, heart to heart. All ages, all welcome. Please bring your deepest listening and your wild imagination.

Creative Woodworking Weekend
Location: Keewaydin Farms

Date: Saturday, June 29th & Sunday, June 30th

Details:
During this creative weekend on the farm, participants will have the opportunity to discover and practice woodworking from multiple angles. We will hike through the woods with local forester, Juli Van Cleve, to learn about different types of trees and their characteristics. Farmer Rufus will lead a sawmill discussion and demonstration, presenting one of his favorite tools on the farm, the Woodmizer LT40. Guest artist, Ryan Rothweiler, will lead a 2-day workshop on woodworking without machines, teaching participants to create a simple milk stool design, which they will take home. We will also have a special presentation by Shanna Cota featuring the elemental characteristics of wood from the perspective of the Taoist 5 elements. She will weave in ancient philosophy, metaphor, and her unique teaching to explore how we connect with the element of wood. In the evening, we will project a number of outdoor educational videos by Michelle & Kenny Workowski from the Nature of Things about peeling bark and making furniture.

Flower Farming

In this workshop, organic growers, Joy Miller and Rufus Haucke will lead a hands-on learning experience for aspiring flower farmers. We will cover annual and perennial production, garden bed preparation and layout, variety selection, crop planning, succession planting, seed starting, companion planting, pest and weed management, harvest methods and timing, and post-harvest care. We will also go into a more detailed study of several successful flower crops on the farm. If you are curious about small-scale flower production or want to establish a flourishing flower garden in your backyard, we hope you will join us.

Raising
Sheep and Goats

Participants have expressed curiosity in small ruminant dairying, so I am currently seeking a local farmer to lead a workshop on managing a sheep or goat dairy operation. If you have any leads on this, please email joy@driftlesscuriosity.org.

Hammock Forest

Details:
Spend the day in the peaceful atmosphere of the Hammock Forest. The beauty of the Hammock Forest is that you can choose your own adventure. Pack a family picnic, come solo with a book, or plan a double date.
Visitors are welcome to bring their own snacks and drinks.
We ask participants to help keep the forest clean by taking their trash with them.
No dogs please.
