Grow More Than Lawns: Backyard Makeover Contest

Location: Your own backyard and online 

Launch Date: Earth Day, Friday, April 22nd, 2022

Backyard Tour & Contest Judging: Saturday, August 20th, 2022


Step 1: Participants pay entry fee, opening on Earth Day, Friday, April 22nd of $35 online 


Step 2: Contestants submit a short “Before” video of their backyard which includes a narrative of their basic makeover plans. “Before” videos can be submitted via email or the Grow More Than Lawns Facebook page.


Step 3: Throughout spring and summer families work in the backyard together.

  • Contestants can join the Facebook group for gardening Q & A, seed swaps, tips, community brainstorming, and progress updates. 
  • Farmers, Rufus and Joy, will be available for Zoom consultations by request.   

Step 4: On Saturday, August 20th, a board of judges will take a “Backyard Tour” to judge the backyard makeover projects. 

  • Points for food production, perennial plantings, pollinator plantings, prairie planting, or lawn replacement/lawn alternatives

2nd place wins Fall CSA

3rd place wins 2 Free DC workshops

All participants invited to Picnic Finale – everyone bring a dish to pass from their garden with any questions.


5K Forage Adventure

Location: Keewaydin Farms, 15270 Haucke Ln, Viola, WI 54664

Date: Saturday, April 30th, 2022

Time: 2:30 PM – 5:00 PM


DC will provide trail maps of possible 5K routes and bags/baskets for foraging

Participants choose their path to forage 

Participants receive 1 minute deduction from their time for each properly identified species of wild edible collected and each Curiosity Checkpoint completed.

2nd place – 2 Free DC Workshops

3rd place – 2 Free Nights Camping

Curiosity Tea Party

Location: Keewaydin Farms, 15270 Haucke Ln, Viola, WI 54664

Join us for this interactive curiosity tea party where you can learn, socialize, and support a good cause. Tea stations will be set up around the farm where participants can taste test and learn about the properties of the tea and how to harvest and make it themselves. Nettle, Dandelion, Red Clover, White Pine, Raspberry Leaf, Sumac, and possibly a few more. Snacks will be available for suggested donation.

Participants may purchase a handmade Driftless Curiosity mug with their registration if they wish for $25.
