Dear Curiosity Journal,

In the broccoli beds, we sweep the stalks for remaining florets. The main heads were harvested weeks ago, but the smaller side shoots continue to produce into the late fall. We pass over the yellowed, blemished, and misshapen heads, while snapping off the tightly knit green clusters. The life cycle of the vegetables are in decrescendo, but the plants keep giving after the main cuts have been made, even after the final fruit has been taken, they will continue their path of decomposition, giving back to the soil from which they came, or perhaps lying in wait in a freezer, or living on as energy intermingled in an abstract human endeavor, a source of forward motion in the wheel of the life cycle we all ride because we eat.
