Dear Curiosity Journal,

I can admit that I’m probably excessively checking the sheep. Rufus called me a helicopter mom yesterday. Now that Betty has kicked off our lambing season with a bit of complication, I’m hyper aware of how I may need to help my gals out. I have to laugh at how many moments in a day I find myself observing the back end of a ewe, examining shape, color, size, and movement. It’s quite comical, yet fascinating to witness the process of late gestation and birth. My prediction is that Cauliflower, our Texel/Bluefaced Leicester (BFL) /Shetland ewe will be next to have her lambs. She’s a spirited lady who fights me on everything, and I doubt that lambing will be an exception to her rule. I’m so curious about her mothering instinct. She will either be fierce with her babies or reject them, but I’m hoping she will accept them, and maybe they will mellow her out a little. Since she was bred to a much smaller Babydoll ram and is a big-bodied gal, I’m hoping she’ll have a relatively smooth delivery, but I have no idea how many lambs she has. It could be one giant baby, twins, or triplets. The Texel and BFL breeds are both prolific (producing many offspring) so there is a good chance she has multiples. We will know soon enough.
